By Emily O’Connell SOLUTIONS TO ongoing problems at the Riccarton bus lounge will drag on for some time yet. The lounge, on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Division St, has been plagued with youth issues since it opened in December 2015. Western News revealed last week that a number of recommendations from a working party were to be discussed at the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board meeting on Tuesday night – including more police presence in the area. The working party consisting of board members, business and landowners, police, community groups and residents’ association representatives have made recommendations, which the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board received at its meeting last week. Three recommendations were approved by the community board and will go to the city council for further discussion. These are an additional police presence, a bylaw which would allow arrests and instant fines to be issued and continued assistance for business owners when removing graffiti. The other 16 recommendations will come back to the community board for discussion in a month’s time. • Turn to page 5

News New principal ready to lead
Fashion By Emily O’Connell ST THOMAS of Canterbury College’s new principal is looking forward to his big move down the hallway. Deputy principal and head of sport, Steve Hart, will be principal starting at the beginning of next year. Mr Hart has been deputy principal for 10 years and has been with the school for 13 years. He will be taking over from the current principal Christine O’Neill – who announced her resignation earlier this year. Mr Hart said he feels really grateful to be leading the school. “It’s an amazing place here. We produce top quality young men and I feel privileged to lead them and the school,” Mr Hart said. He is looking forward to working with the staff and helping develop them as leaders. Mr Hart said his favourite part of his role as deputy principal was working with the students. “I love coming to work each day. The students are honest and enthusiastic and they always put a smile on my face,” Mr Hart said.

GRAFFITI REPORTS Riccarton was the third highest suburb to attract reports of graffiti to the city council during August. Fourty-two graffiti incidents were reported in Riccarton during August which is more than three times the amount reported in July. MADDIE COLLINS CONCERT This year’s St Thomas of Canterbury College and Villa Maria College Variety Concert is raising funds for Maddie Collins. Maddie needs $750,000 to fly to the US to receive the surgery that will save her life. The concert is on Thursday night at 7pm at the St Thomas’ hall. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door by cash only. FIRE AT STAHLTON ENGINEERED CONCRETE Fire services had to force their way into Stahlton Engineered Concrete after reports of a fire from neighbours. The fire service arrived at the building on Waterloo Rd in Hornby at 9.51pm on Sunday. The fire crew found a water pump had caught ablaze. They spent 15min at the property and were able to extinguish the fire without any problems.

Your Local Views Improving ways to get people from home to work Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke writes about Halswell, recent changes and its future WE ALL know that Halswell, towns and suburbs around Christchurch’s west will keep growing. So, we have to work out how to get people from where they live to where they work. I’ve recently done some counting at the Lincoln Rd and Whiteleigh Ave intersection in the morning rush hour. People on bicycles make up nine per cent of the traffic entering Addington village, and 11 per cent are on the bus. The rest of us are in cars, and 80 per cent have just the driver. There are two ways of approaching this problem. First, the big solution. Forget the new motorway; people I know in Rolleston are eagerly awaiting it so they can zoom into the central city, so the motorway won’t help. How about light rail (i.e. a modern-day tram) along

Did you know that secondary school principals will no longer take out of zone students? This will cut down the hauling that happens every school day. Then, there is continuing to grow the city’s cycleway network, and e-bikes may get to be really important for longer commutes. Doubling the frequency of the buses from 15 minutes to seven to eight minutes would help too, but this starts to look like a convoy. What about car sharing? Sadly, people these days often don’t know their neighbours so they are hardly likely to share a car with a person living blocks away. Applying a levy on sole oc-

And, as has been already pointed out, how would they police it and who would be responsible for enforcing it? Chrissi Tukaki – If you don’t like we commoners go and build a commune out in the country. Don’t want a funeral home, don’t want cars. Spare me. Carolyn Fraser – Don’t want a funeral home built down their street and now want the road solely to themselves. At least that’s not going to happen. Pamela Neil – These people just keep trying to change the
world. I lived in Glandovey Rd when the neighbours were normal people. Hans Steinz – So why not close the street at both ends? Okay, “residents” would have to park around the corner, but it would be very quiet. Jonathan Scott – It’s a public road. Everyone has the legal right to drive on it. Helen Young – Who the hell do they think they are? We are ratepayers too and should be able to use all streets in Christchurch any time we want to. Maraea Cracknell – I’d love that to happen to my street too. But it will never happen.

My guess is we will have a workshop on them first,” Mrs Broughton said. Community board chairman Mike Mora said he thinks the community board is doing its best. “We’re going as quick as we can. There are laws in place now if somebody breaches trespass orders the police are contacted,” Mr Mora said. No police were at the community board meeting but Constable Aaron Thorn said “the city council talks about trespassing, they seem to think we have the power to trespass anyone from anywhere but we can only trespass people from a private area.” “They seem to think we have powers in the Summary Offences Act. And there is one but the problem is we have to
prove the person is about to commit an offence which can be quite difficult,” Constable Thorn said. Removing WiFi is not going to be solution to the anti-social behaviour. The community board has taken away the word ‘removing’ and replaced it with ‘using’ in the WiFi recommendation. The amended recommendation reads – The Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board request staff to report back to the board on the viability and implications of using the free WiFi from the Riccarton bus lounge. City councillor Vicki Buck said the wording needed to be changed because the city council is trying to extend WiFi connections in central city. “Installing WiFi along Riccarton Rd is a good idea. WiFi is a basic thing now. It should be on buses. I’m not in favour of removing access to the internet,” Cr Vicki Buck said.

News WWE superfans meet wrestling idol By Julia Evans ZEINAT ALEBEL almost broke down in tears when she met her WWE professional wrestling idol, Dean Ambrose. The 18-year-old Sockburn resident would describe herself as a wrestling super fan. Which was proved after she and her sister Sofiya, 14, lined up from 7am at The Hub Hornby for the chance to meet Raw tag team champion, Ambrose. “My heart is racing,” she said. Zeinat got Ambrose to sign her cellphone, which she said was now one of her favourite possessions. After the 3pm meet and greet, the teens went to WWE Live at Horncastle Arena – the only live wrestling event in the country. Zeinat said seeing WWE Live was seven years in the making. “Last time we saw them I was 11 and Sofiya was 7.” But she said they’d both been watching it on television for as long as they can remember, if not longer. “I’ve been watching since 1999 and I was born in 1999,”

By Julia Evans ARTIST RUBY Williams stood on the workshop floor of ENI Engineering in Halswell’s industrial outskirts. It might not seem like a place for creating art but the 15-yearold Villa Maria College student couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. Ruby saw the sculpture she designed as part of the SCAPE Public Art season for the first time. “It’s perfect. It’s exactly what I had in mind. Absolutely perfect,” she said. The mammoth steel branch, which will be fixed to a tree in Hagley Park, was shaped by ENI engineer Paul Bacon. It’s not something he gets to do very often. Ruby picked out the “pinkypurple” shade it will be painted,
saying it represented her personality. Ruby’s mum Breda said her “budding artist” had been waiting eagerly to see the sculpture all day. She was “so, so proud” of her daughter. Ruby won the chance to see her sketches come to life after winning the senior section of the Re:ACTIVATE project. “I don’t know how to explain how it feels. It’s just really, really cool to finally see it,” Ruby said. The branch will be on display for six weeks during the public art season from October 7. It will even feature as a stop on the public walk, which takes people on a tour of all the public art in the city. The teen said seeing the branch had given her the drive to keep chasing her creative dreams.

Break-in at taekwondo Silver birches will not be cut down club; gear stolen Fashion By Emily O’Connell A HEI Hei taekwondo club is trying to make-do after gear was stolen out of their shed last week. Said KIX Taekwondo Christchurch instructor, Jupiter Bignotea: “Basically what was taken was the gear that we use every day. We are a not-for-profit club so all our funding is in the fees of the students. When time accumulates we will be able to buy some more gear but getting all this gear will take time,” he said. The shed was broken into early last Monday morning. Forty-eight interlocking red and blue mats, seven kick shields, eight paddle target pads, 16 focus punch pads, two medicine balls, a first aid kit, one boxing punch bag, two agility ladders, two sets of elastic bands, skipping ropes, personalised screens and a novelty gong were stolen. Landlord, Tracey Buunk, said Mr Bignotea is doing such a good job with the club and it is disappointing someone would do this. She said they have three sheds and a container – which people

Gardening are working from because they are building extensions. “All the locks got cut off and they went through items in the other sheds but they took a lot of Mr Bignotea’s stuff that he has for the groups he runs – he runs two sometimes three classes a week. He has a good turnout of local people, a lot walk to the venue so this has really hit us hard,” Mrs Buunk said. Mrs Buunk said the estimated $3500 of equipment was not insured by the club. And because she didn’t know that, it wasn’t listed separately under her insurance which means if she made a claim, the excess would be $5000. “We decided to try monitor

our shed ourself. I installed a security system on the shed. If someone opened the door or tried to break in without turning off the alarm it would send text notifications to the instructors. The message sent at 12.10am Monday morning and of course we are all asleep at the time,” Mr Bignotea said. A senior student from the club has set up a Givealittle page to help buy new gear. Mr Bignotea said there are 29 mats which were left behind and students are bringing in their own gear to train with. By Emily O’Connell NINETEEN silver birch trees in Halswell residents have campaigned to be cut down will not face the axe. John and Gillian Gartly along with neighbours down Rempstone Drive have been seeking approval to cut the trees down for 10 years. Last week the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board agreed with the staff recommendation to leave the trees. Mr Gartly described the whole situation as a “typical city council farcical, giving people the concept they have some say, when they really don’t, because the decision is already made.” Mr Gartly who has lived on Rempstone Drive for nearly two decades, said the trees cause two problems for the residents – they’re a nuisance and a health risk. He thinks his wife’s allergies are caused by them. Community board deputy chairwoman, Helen Broughton, said: “If people come back as a group, I’m happy to open it up again. They have put a lot of effort in to getting it this far. We
can come back to this if we need to.” Community board member Debbie Mora questioned the health risks of leaving the trees on the residential street but was reassured by city council arborist Jonathan Hansen. “Someone needs to prove that the trees are the sole cause,” Mr Hansen said. Mr Hansen said they received advise from the Canterbury District Health Board and this is the best they can do given the circumstances. Mr Gartly said they will determine their next step once they receive a copy of the community board resolution.

Hoon Hay Handiscope supervisor Dot Johnston said the group only has three volunteers and that isn’t enough. “We need volunteers to pour the cups of tea, clean dishes and make sandwiches,” she said. “I would prefer to be in with the people, keeping an eye on what they’re doing, but I can’t because I have to be where I’m needed,” Mrs Johnston said. She has been with the group for about 40 years and loves seeing
how happy the people who come along are when they are socialising and making crafts. Student bakes for SPORTS former All Black By Emily O’Connell MIDDLETON Grange student Rachel Allan, 15, spent her service time for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award baking for formrt All Black “Tiny” Hill. The Joshua Foundation manages the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award. The award is a non-competitive personal challenge. Rachel baked for Mr Hill as he has bad arthritis. He was an All Black for four years and played two of his 19 matches as captain. “She would actually go down there and bake him biscuits and make sure he was okay,” Rachel’s father and Joshua Foundation’s founder Chris Allan said. Participants create a

programme of voluntary leisure time activities. The award has three levels – bronze, silver and gold. There are four sections of activities involved – service to the community, skill, physical recreation and expedition. Villa girls’ touching gesture to charities SCHOOL By Emily O’Connell VILLA MARIA College Year 7 students are helping Christchurch keep its Garden City image. Isabel Vane and Bridget O’Dea have made the city a little greener, by taking part in the Year 7 and 8 ‘Take a Stand’ project. The students wrote letters to nurseries asking for particular plants which they had carefully chosen for durability, colour and scent. They then wrote notes of love and encouragement on red hearts and tucked them inside each plant. The students delivered the plants to City Mission where they were split between the women’s balcony and men’s outdoor garden. They also gave plants to Te Whare Hauora – Otautahi Women’s Refuge. Te Whare Hauora’s manager Maania said they are humbled by the donation as with any donation they receive. “What we’re most proud of is that the young women have an opportunity to raise not only their awareness but others around them about the impact of violence,” Maania said. St Thomas’ league talent on trial By Andrew King ST THOMAS’ Seth Tauamiti and Jordan Riki have been named in the New Zealand Resident 18s team. The team will compete in a trial against Taurahere – which is made up of New Zealand-born players currently plying their trade in Australia – on Saturday in Auckland. A New Zealand 18s team will be selected from the match to take on the Australian Schoolboys later this month. The last time a New Zealand 18s fixture took place was in 2015. St Thomas’ league coach Andrew Auimatagi said both lads have a heap of potential and it is great to see it being recognised. “They thoroughly deserve it and have done really well. It is great to see two young guys able to start to make a career out of it [league],” he said. Tauamiti plays second row in league and No 8 in union, while Riki is a utility back in both codes. Both play for the St Thomas’ league team and featured heavily in the school’s first XV. Celebration Lions second row/centre Daniel Sakisi was also included in the side. He also played in the Shirley Boys’ High first XV team this year.

By Andrew King ST THOMAS’ first XV prop Tommy Taualai was given the last opportunity of the season to put points on the board with a conversion attempt on Tuesday against Oamaru’s St Kevin’s College. In the dying seconds of the game, the year 13 student lined up a kick from near the lefthand touchline, as St Thomas’ supporters ramped up the volume in an attempt to will the kick over. St Thomas’ won the game 38-12, running in six tries in their final hit-out of the season, reclaiming the G. Airey Cup in the process. The two schools have been competing for the cup since
1961 in what has been a pretty even tussle. Theo Fowler, Sione Afemui, Seth Tauamiti, Elisara Vaifale, Cormack Tarrant and Patrick Elia all grabbed five-pointers in the win. St Thomas’ attack coach Paul Burton said it would appear Taualai “really enjoyed the opportunity” to try slot the conversion from the sideline. “It is not a normal thing, you know, if there was a lot riding on the points our regular kicker would have taken it,” he laughed. In case you were wondering, Taualai’s kick only just missed. It was a great effort though, said St Thomas’ deputy principal Brendan Biggs.

TOMATO AND MOZZARELLA WITH CRUMBED EGGPLANT Ingredients 1 Eggplant, sliced into 1cm rounds 2 Eggs, lightly whisked and seasoned 1 cup Breadcrumbs ¼ cup Chopped fresh herbs, e.g. parsley or chives 1 bottle Oil, enough for cooking eggplant 2 cups Tomatoes, sliced or chopped 2 whole Mozzarella cheese 1 cup Basil leaves 1 drizzle Lemon-infused olive oil, to serve Directions Firstly crumb the eggplant. Dip into seasoned egg, then roll into the breadcrumbs and parsley combined in another bowl. Set aside in the fridge until ready to cook. Into a frying pan pour a little oil. Fry the eggplant on a medium heat to ensure they cook right through, turning once to brown both sides. Onto a platter, place the eggplant, tomatoes, torn mozzarella,

MOZZARELLA AND PESTO SCHNITZEL PARCELS Ingredients 1 Salt & freshly ground pepper, to season 8 slices Beef schnitzel 250g Mozzarella cheese, sliced ¼ cup Basil pesto 1 Tbsp Olive oil Directions

Season schnitzel with salt and pepper and lay on a work surface. Arrange two slices of mozzarella on one half of each schnitzel and top each with a heaped teaspoon of pesto. Fold the empty side of each schnitzel over to cover the filling and secure by threading two toothpicks through each schnitzel parcel. Heat a non-stick frying pan, add a film of oil and place schnitzel parcels in the pan. Cook over a medium heat for 2 to 3min on each side, or until browned on both sides and cheese has melted.

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,
hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.
